Mathare in Focus Retail Partners Ottawa Toronto Kitchener-Waterloo Our Mathare in Focus project provides CMETrust scholars with an opportunity to build new skills during their school breaks and raise funds for more scholarships. Each April, CMETrust scholars participate in a one-day photography workshop with a local Kenyan photographer. The scholars are then given disposable cameras and encouraged to take pictures of life in Mathare as they see it. Their pictures captured the hope, despair and inspiration of the Mathare Slum, through their own eyes. The Calendar & Photography Exhibition is a collection of the finest of these photographs accompanied by provoking and powerful written descriptions. Framed prints and calendars were sold at the Mathare in Focus Calendar Launch & Photography Exhibition in Ottawa, at Arts Court in 2009 and at the Cube Gallery in 2010. Through this project, CMETrust scholars are given a voice to express themselves and to tell their stories of life in the slum in their own words. Mathare in Focus 2012
